April 9, 2002: 100th Innocent Person Released from
Death Row!

Dear Friends,

I just wanted to share the wonderful news that the 100th innocent person has been released from death row in the United States. Ray Krone was released from Arizona's death row yesterday. Krone had been convicted of rape and murder in 1992, but was released after DNA evidence not only proved his innocence, but pointed to the involvement of an already imprisoned inmate.

This announcement, coupled with yesterday's exciting U. S. Supreme Court decision to stay the execution of Abu-Ali Abdur'Rahman, provides a wonderful opportunity to renew the call for a moratorium on executions. Please consider sending letters to the editor, to Governor Sundquist, and to your state legislators discussing these events and the need for a moratorium on the death penalty in our state. Our system of capital punishment is clearly broken, and it is time to raise awareness and help people see the need for change.

Many thanks,
Hedy Weinberg, Executive Director
