April 28, 2008: IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED - Tell your State Rep by WEDNESDAY to vote NO on pulling SJR127 to House Floor

Dear ACLU-TN Legislative Alert Network:

With only a few weeks left in the Tennessee General Assembly, the TN Family Action Council and Eagle Forum are engaged in a full frontal attack on reproductive freedom and are sending out lots of misinformation in an effort to intimidate house representatives so that they will pull defeated SJR127 from the sub-committee to the House Floor. This action is planned for Thursday and your house representative needs to hear from you NOW asking her/him to vote NO.

As you know, SJR127 is the proposed constitutional amendment that would place language in the state constitution stating that there is no right to abortion and lay the groundwork to allow the legislature to ban abortion in Tennessee if Roe v. Wade were overturned.

Please contact your legislator now and remind her/him that SJR127 has nothing to do with "partial-birth abortion" and that there is already a Federal Ban on these procedures so that they cannot take place anywhere in the country, including Tennessee

Ask your house representative to respect the House Committee Structure and NOT PULL SJR127 from the committee.  Those attacking reproductive freedom need 66 votes to successfully pull the resolution out, so every vote counts.  We expect the vote to take place on Thursday.  Please call or email your house representative NOW.

The easiest way to identity your legislators is to go to http://www.congress.org and simply type in your zip code and click “Go.”  You will get a list of all your elected officials. (You may have to type in your street address if your zip code is split between more than one district).  Please make sure to include your address if you are emailing your representative so they know you live in their district

Many thanks.

Hedy
