Clean Records for Innocent Tennesseans
SB 1896/HB 1752 would allow individuals whose charges are dismissed to obtain a court order to have their records cleared at the time of the dismissal, at no cost.
By simply expanding the successful expungement model currently used in cases of acquittal, this bill would relieve innocent individuals from unnecessary barriers to a clean record, minimize collateral consequences for individuals who have a criminal record but shouldn’t, and foster innocent Tennesseans’ ability to gain employment.
CURRENT STATUS: This bill was taken off notice for the Criminal Justice Committee on March 23.
TAKE ACTION: Urge lawmakers to remove unnecessary barriers to a clean record.
