ACLU-TN Third Annual Students' Rights Conference

ACLU-TN To Hold Third Annual Students' Rights Conference

The third annual American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) Students' Rights Conference, which takes place on Saturday, February 26, will focus on young people's rights both in school and in the community. The Conference will focus on a range of topics, including: what to do when you are stopped by the police, discipline issues, due process, the right to protest, dress codes, religious freedom, school newspapers and websites, and the right to privacy.

This year's featured speakers include Metro Davidson County Police Chief Ronal Serpas and Juvenile Court Judge Betty Green of the Metro Juvenile Court. Other speakers include Susan Brooks, Clinical Professor of Law at Vanderbilt Law School, David Hudson, research attorney with the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center, and Jerri Mauldin, Assistant Public Defender with the Metropolitan Nashville Public Defender's Office, who will participate in a panel discussion on students' rights in school settings.

According to ACLU-TN Executive Director Hedy Weinberg, "The conference brings together a diverse group of articulate and thoughtful students who choose to spend a Saturday discussing their rights and responsibilities, sharing concerns about civil liberties, and preparing to become active participants in their communities."

The conference, which will be held at Hillsboro High School in Nashville, is open to public and private high school students and is free of charge. Registration is required. Please call 615-320-7142 for more information.
