ACLU's Steinhardt at Tennessee Tech Conference on
Homeland Security

Barry Steinhardt, associate director of the National ACLU and director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Program, will be a featured panelist during the Stonecipher Symposium on Technology, Communication and Culture at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville on March 24 and 25. The theme of this year's Symposium is "Homeland Security in a High-Tech Age," and will feature military leaders, eminent researchers and thinkers, and representatives of the new security industry. Retired Four-Star General Carl Stiner, Tennessee Tech alumnus and the former Commander in Chief of the United States Special Operations Command, will be a keynote speaker.

Participants will speak on biometrics and data gathering and will consider civil and military defense measures in light of civil liberties and national security. In addition to Steinhardt, panelists include: David McIntyre, deputy director of the ANSER Institute for Homeland Security; Rebecca Dornbusch, deputy director of the International Biometric Industry Association; and Clyde Wayne Crews Jr., director of technology at the Cato Institute. Dr. Kathleen Carley, Director of the Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Change at Carnegie Mellon University, will present her research on terrorist networks, and the new Homeland Security Director for Tennessee and a representative of the FBI will also be on board. A representative of Research Electronics International will demonstrate modern information gathering technology and James Albaugh, president and CEO of Integrated Defense Systems of the Boeing Company, will outline how Boeing provides "integrated solutions - joining network-centric information with integrated military air, land, sea and space-based platforms - for defense organizations around the world."

For more information, call (931) 372-3507 or visit www.tntech.edu/stonecipher. All events are free and open to the public. The keynote addresses will be held in the Derryberry Hall Auditorium. All other events will be held in the Roaden University Center's OVC Room.
