Anti-abortion politicians will stop at nothing to limit or ban abortion care in our state. Bills that seek to block or inhibit access to safe, legal and affordable abortion in Tennessee are working their way through committees and we need you to urge your lawmakers to stop them:
- Forcing doctors to lie to women. SB 2465/HB 2568 requires medical professionals to provide inaccurate information to women stating that they have the option to reverse a chemical abortion. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposes so-called medication abortion “reversal” bills because “reversal” procedures are not based on medicine or scientific evidence, and are unethical legislative mandates that are dangerous to women’s health.
- The most restrictive abortion bill in the U.S. SB 2196/HB 2263, as amended, criminalizes medical professionals who perform an abortion after six weeks and restricts the reasons a woman can have an abortion at all. The bill also includes language prohibiting abortion at multiple points in a woman’s pregnancy, an attempt to ensure that abortion access is taken away even if the courts strike down the 6-week ban portion of the bill. In addition, the bill requires a woman seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound and the doctor to describe it to her and display the images so that she can view them if she chooses. If passed, this bill will effectively outlaw abortion in the state of Tennessee. In fact, the governor and state legislators say they are committed to passing the strictest law in the country with the hopes that it will end up at the United States Supreme Court.
