Criminal Law Reform

America’s criminal justice system should keep communities safe, treat people fairly, and use fiscal resources wisely. ACLU-TN advocates for a criminal justice system that fosters public safety by reducing mass incarceration and ensuring police accountability.

Education Equity

ACLU-TN works to ensure that all children in Tennessee are given an equal educational opportunity regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, wealth, citizenship, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Free Speech

The First Amendment protects individuals’ right to free speech and expression regardless of the popularity of the viewpoint.  Free speech is vital to a vibrant democracy.  ACLU-TN has long championed individuals’ right to speak, read, publish and protest freely, without fear of censorship.

Gender Equality

Women have made great strides in the fight for equality, yet women still face discrimination, violence, and institutional barriers to equal participation in society. ACLU-TN works to ensure that women can enjoy the benefits of full equality in work, education, and every sphere of our communities.

Immigrants’ Rights

Regardless of one’s views on U.S. immigration policy, the fundamental civil liberties protections of the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution protect every person in this country — citizens and non-citizens alike.

LGBTQ+ Equality

ACLU has been fighting for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people since 1936, when it brought its first gay rights case. Our goal is an America where LGBTQ+ people can live openly, with their identities, relationships and families respected.
